6/12/2017 - Congratulations to Henry on the acceptance of his manuscript demonstrating the use of mixed ligand silver-based ionic liquids as stationary phases in argentation gas chromatography! The Rossini group at ISU was also instrumental in this study through their use of solid-state NMR techniques to characterize the olefin-silver binding sites.
6/1/2017 - Our group welcomes summer researchers Liese Peterson, Jiang Lu, and Gabriel Odugbesi! Liese is an undergraduate student at Concordia College (MN); Jiang Lu is an undergraduate student from Beijing Normal University in China; and Gabriel will officially enter the graduate program at ISU this fall.

We would like to welcome Andrea Tsatalis to the group! Andrea is an undergraduate student at UT and will be working on understanding the role of ionic liquids in the extraction of DNA as well as their influence in downstream PCR applications.

The Chemical Measurement and Imaging (CMI) Program in the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation has funded our three year proposal titled "Exploring Ionic Liquids in Sample Preparation and Multidimensional Chromatographic Separations." The Anderson Group welcomes Harmonie Christian to the group! Harmonie is a high school student at St. Ursula Academy in Ottawa Hills, Ohio. Harmonie is a participant in the ACS Project SEED program for the summer and will join a project related to improving DNA extraction and purification methods.

The Anderson Research Group welcomes Kevin Clark to the group! Kevin completed his undergraduate studies at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. He comes to the group with a wealth of industry experience. His Ph.D. studies will focus on DNA extraction methodologies and sample preparation.

Bruna and Leandro are both visiting graduate students from Professor Fabio Augusto's group at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Campinas, Brazil. Leandro is supported by the Research Internship Abroad Fellowship awarded by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
Dr. Anderson presented an invited seminar on August 1 to the Institute of Chemistry at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Campinas, Brazil. He also presented an invited talk at the 15th International Conference on the Advances in Extraction Technologies (Extech 2013) in Joao Pessoa, Brazil.

The Anderson Research Group welcomes Prof. Melek Merdivan to the group. Prof. Merdivan is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. She will spend her sabbatical in our group researching the use of PIL-based SPME techniques in environmental analysis.

The Anderson Research Group welcomes Prof. Lijun He to the group. Prof. He is a Professor of Chemistry at Henan University of Technology in China. Professor He is supported by the China Scholarship Council and will spend 1 year in our group working on new microextraction techniques.
The Anderson Research Group welcomes Arturo Armando Rincon to the group. Arturo is a visiting Ph.D. student working under the supervision of Prof. Veronica Pino at the Universidad de La Laguna in Tenerife, Spain. Arturo is supported through a grant from his home country. His research will focus on the removal of boron species from water using microextraction methods recently developed by our group.

Dr. Anderson will be awarded the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science at the 2012 Pittcon Conference in Orlando, Florida on March 14.
We welcome Qing Qin and Cheng Zhang to the research group. During their Ph.D. studies in the group, Qing and Cheng will be working on new sample preparation techniques as well as alternative synthetic/polymerization approaches to creating polymeric ionic liquids.

Dr. Anderson has been invited to serve as a member of the International Advisory Committee for the International Symposium on the Advances in Extraction Technologies (ExTech) meeting that is held annually at various locations throughout the world. This September, he will give an invited lecture at this year's ExTech 2011 meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Congratulations to Daniel Steyer and Mark Silver! Their grants were both funded from the Office of Undergraduate Research at UT. Daniel will be doing summer research on synthesizing new ionic liquids for the complexation of borate and understanding this complexation behavior using Boron-11 NMR. Mark will be spending the summer developing new SPME coatings for isolating and determining genotoxic impurities from active pharmaceutical ingredients.
The Anderson Group welcomes Paulina Biernacka and Marta Wasielewska! Paulina and Marta are Ph.D. students in analytical chemistry at the Gdansk University of Technology in Poland. They received funding from the European Union Science and Social Initiatives program and will be spending the summer and part of the fall semester in our laboratory using our SPME coatings for the analysis of volatile fatty acids and raw spirits.
Dr. Anderson received a 2010-2011 Faculty Excellence Award from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This award recognizes excellence of faculty members in teaching, research and service to the university.

Congratulations to Derrick Mitchell for being awarded the prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship! Derrick is a senior at Central Catholic High School in Toledo and was one of 7 Ohio high school seniors to receive the scholarship! The scholarship pays for tuition, room and board, and books. Derrick will be attending The Ohio State University this fall! Derrick was a 2010 ACS Project SEED student in the Anderson Research Group and has become a YouTube sensation with his video describing his SPME project.

We welcome Jessica López-Dariaz to our group! Jessica is visiting us from the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the Universidad de La Laguna in Spain. While in our group, Jessica will be analyzing various aromas from food products using our PIL-based SPME coatings coupled with GC/MS.

Congratulations to Jennifer Dudek and Anthony Canestraro who were both awarded undergraduate summer research fellowships from the Office of Undergraduate Research! Jennifer will be working on the design of new sorbent materials for the extraction of pharmaceutically-relevant compounds using SPME. Anthony's research will explore the synthesis of new materials for the sequestration of water.
Our manuscript "Polymeric ionic liquids as CO2 selective sorbent coatings for solid-phase microextraction" was picked as a "Highlighted Article" by the editors of Analytical Chemistry !
Dr. Anderson received the LC/GC Magazine's 2010 Emerging Leader in Chromatography Award at Pittcon in Orlando on March 1.
We welcome Tien Ho and Tianhao Li to the group. Tien and Tianhao joined us in January 2010 and will be working on solid-phase microextraction coupled with GC, and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with HPLC, respectively.
Dr. Anderson received the Young Scientist Award at the 11th International Symposium on Advances in Extraction Technologies, sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Dr. Anderson has been promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure).
Our collaboration with Dr. Pitner and co-workers at Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany) has yielded a publication in Analytical Chemistry, with Cong Yao being the lead author.We have several more projects with manuscripts either under review or in progress.
